Aberratio Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Yuri Almeida: The band was born in 2013 with me (Yuri) as drummer, David as vocals and Julio as guitarist. After some tests, Thiago Israel joined us as the bassist. He left a bit later, so in 2016 Nathan Franco joins the band as the new bassist, introducing a fretless bass to the band and reforming all bass lines. Aberratio aims for tradition, always keeping the old school death metal alive.

2.In December you had released your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Yuri Almeida: The idea on our recording was always to keep it to the closest reality of the band. That is why we avoided editions to the limit, only edited what was really necessary. The drums are raw, no effects. Who listens to our full length disc will know exactly how we are on live.
Nathan Franco: Both guitar and bass tones are the closest possible to the live. We used a 7 strings guitar and a 4 strings fretless bass (with roundwounds). We all recorded with the same equipment we use on live. And the vocal is extremely true, same quality on stage.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Yuri Almeida: The members of Aberratio are apolitical and atheist. Only Nathan has a Taoist way of life, what does not happen to be a religion but an intimate and natural philosophy of him. Our lyrics talks about philosophy, politics, religion, history and things alike. Our themes strike fundamentalism, radicalism and neurosis provoked by politicians and religious groups

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Aberratio'?

Yuri Almeida: Aberratio means “aberration” in latin. Our music is obscure and speaks of things that we may consider aberrations itself. Chernobyl for example, talks about the nuclear accident at Ukraine. Assyrians was inspired at the Islamic attack on the ancient ruins of the assyrians.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Yuri Almeida: The best shows are the underground ones, those where the crowd know what they’re listening. We have played on events with different types of crowds all together, but that is not the same as a crowd who knows death metal. The stage is a place where death manifests itself, where all obscurity of the genre is noticed.
Nathan Franco: I believe the shows we enjoyed more were the ones we played with undergrounds bands of the genre, like Corpse Grinder and Ancestor. We are simple and every show we made was really nice until now.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yuri Almeida: We are a band that every member has his own job and we don’t desire to become like a company, like happens to Metallica or Slayer. If we take Aberratio as a job like a company, it would lose its sense for us. We don’t have tours until now, we play where we are invited to. For the future would be interesting a tour in Europe, where our music has more acceptance. Our death metal is more European than American.
Nathan Franco: Yes. We have our own life to move on and our own paths to thread. We cannot (nor want) to have Aberratio as a company or something alike. And a tour would only be possible if everyone had vacations from theirs jobs in the same period of time. So we play when we are invited.

7.The new album was released on 'Heavy Metal Rock', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Yuri Almeida: Aberratio debut album was release by 7 stamps. Thanks to them our music reached other countries and regions, like USA, Latin America and some Europe countries. The stamps are: Heavy Metal Rock, Holocaust Records, Cianeto Discos, Songs for Satan,, The MetalVox, Violent records e Brothers of Metal. All those stamps are well respected and all of them support the underground scenario, when they notice quality in a band.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

Yuri Almeida: Thanks to social media, we have made contact with fans worldwide, like Czech Republic, Netherlands and other countries and regions. The internet opened doors for all bands. The bad thing is that there are some bad shit being spread in the middle of it all.
Nathan Franco: Aberratio is being played on radios, like Metal Devastation Radio (London) and the acceptance is being really nice. We have many accesses from Russia in our website, like 2nd in rank.
1st rank is Always Brazil, our native land. We are achieving some reputation, naturally. And we have no hurry on this matter.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Yuri Almeida: There is only one way: the tradition. Our root is traditional metal and on it we will prevail. A band, to evolve itself, does not need to change its musical essence. Let’s remember of Motorhead, Benediction and other bands that raised themselves inside their own genre, without changing themselves or losing their essence.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Yuri Almeida: Aberratio has not a specific influence. Me and the guitarist Julio listen traditional metal since always. David enjoys listening death brutal and black metal. Nathan is more into progressive genres and brazilian music, like MPB and northeastern music (called ‘baiĆ£o’, mixolydian mode). We can say our guitar and drums got influences from Autopsy, Bolt Thrower and bands alike. Maybe the raw vocals of our singer David Andrade came from Sarcofago and Cannibal Corpse. Bass lines may seem to have some influence of Death, but actually it has more influence of jazz and mainly MPB.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Yuri Almeida: We like barbecue and cold beer. We are all half nihilists and half hedonists (laughs). Nathan has interest in design and art, since he has a career as a designer. We have interest in our own themes we speak of in our lyrics, like history, philosophy and things alike.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Yuri Almeida: We wish to see traditional metal get stronger worldwide. Europe is the great cradle of it, but we want the flame of death metal to be spread across the world.
All band members are grateful for the support and for this interview. Thank you!
